First up for Let's Go!! Rider Week is probably the most reviled of the Riders.
After the epic revival for the franchise that was Kamen Rider Black, it was decided to make the next series a direct sequel bringing back the fan-favorite lead of Minami Kotaro and give him new powers. The new series took a much lighter tone than Black, and was met with lukewarm fan reaction. It would be the last Kamen Rider series of the original generation, until Kamen Rider Kuuga aired 11 years later.
It was also brought over to the US by Saban Productions as Masked Rider, featuring a highly altered plot and new cast much like their earlier hit Power Rangers did. This was made as more of a sitcom with combat, then a monster of the week fighter like PR. It lasted one season and quickly faded away, and it is not fondly remembered.
I chose this guy to start us off, since he was the first Rider I ever saw. (Say what you will, Black RX did introduce alot of American youth to the franchise.) I can't speak for the original series as it is one of the few Rider shows I have seen none of, but I do like his design. The high collar and larger eyes really do evoke the Grasshopper that most Riders are based on.
Black RX is an interesting series, in that there is a lot to like about it but making it a direct sequel to Black was probably a mistake. It was judged against that, and the tone shift really hurt it. If you can, check out the last dozen or so episodes for the best of the series. Plus, Riders everywhere!
Yeah, I do agree that if it was a separate series - folks would have looked on it more favorably. I think the direct link really hurt it. (It also would have been great for Black to show up as a mentor for the new RX, like the older Riders used to in the old shows.)
You could have tied it in, with the villains trying to make a new Kingstone and that one fragmenting creating RX. Just make it a new person and leave Kotaro as the veteran Black.
I still remember YEARS ago when I, after being aware of the character for a few years, FINALLY clued in that he's supposed to look like a grasshopper (or whatever similar bug he is) lol
I don't know if its true or not (you'd have to look it up) but I had read a long time ago that the Masked Rider US series didn't get cancelled so much due to ratings but because either the creator or owners of Kamen Rider were so offended by what they did to the series that they refused to licence any further footage and it was quietly cancelled due to that reason. Old wives tale or truth, I dunno, I just remember reading that a long time ago, lol.
It wouldn't surprise me, they are quite happy with how Power Rangers turned out and re-import it back to Japan - but Masked Rider probably pissed them off pretty bad.
I've heard they take Kamen Rider pretty seriously over there, he's like the equivalent of Batman over there or something. I forget if its Ultraman or Goku that's considered their Superman though, lol

Love this piece. One of my favorite Rider designs
