Public Domain Hero Week II - Five heroes and villains from the public domain re-imagined.
The woman called "Lady Satan" was first encountered in occupied France during World War 2, when a group of Nazi soldiers reported her appearing and using "demonic powers" to kill most of their garrison as well as the commanding officer. She would continue to appear at random points in the war, connected to bizarre occurences and Axis defeats.
In reality she was a woman who died with her fiance while fleeing the war, when their ship was bombed by the Germans. A group of beings took pity on the girl, and offered to return her to life, and grant her their power if she would serve as their agent in the realm of man. She would be tasked with destroying malicious beings that sought to sow havok and death, and corrupt the hearts of men.
After the war ended, sightings of Lady Satan lessened, but she would continue to fight against the darkness from within the shadows. Undying, unaging, and forever constant on her mission.
- Lady Satan (created by George Tuska) first appeared in 1941's Dynamic Comics #2
I know some of you are groaning that I made her nude. I was gonna do a second version of her in a more public friendly costume, but I had trouble thinking of something other than plain clothes or her classic style dress. Still, this isn't a cop-out, I had always intended one version of my Lady Satan design to be nude. This is inspired by the idea of witches/wiccans/etc performing rituals "skyclad" or in the nude.
Part of my idea for her is that despite her powers and connections being to entities beyond common knowledge, in our society she would be viewed as a tool of the devil. The other part is that perception and truth are far apart. She is blinded by her mask, but it allows her to see the world for what it really is, and to perceive the creatures that hide beyond what normal people can see. At the same time, she is laid bare to the world - freeing herself from the bindings of society and technology, and also a sign of faith to the beings she has made contract to.
Also, while she would have fought many Nazis that were possessed, manipulated by, or just plain working for the evil spirits - I would have it revealed that the more horrific atrocities of the war, including Hitler and his inner circle, were commited solely by men. As such she could not interfere in the war, since she was not fighting Nazis, but these evil creatures. She also might have fought a few Allied troops under the creatures control.
A neat thing about her being essentially immortal is that you could do a ton of stories beyond her origins in WW2.
